There are many villas built as homes, from the fifteenth century to the nineteenth century, in the most beautiful countryside and the hillsides which surround Lucca.
The villas, summer homes as an alternative to the winter in the city, hidden by large tree gardens, were full of arcades, halls, frescoes and statues inside, and bath-tubs, fish ponds and lakes in the parks.
These "jewels" are often handed down from generation to generation, and they are still mainly private properties.
